Synopsis
Masami Ito, a socially isolated young man turns to an anonymous message board for romantic advice - only to be pulled deeper into a spiral of obsession, misguidance, and escalating consequences. As anonymous users debate, encourage, and manipulate him, the community becomes increasingly entangled in his decisions, and the boundary between advice and harm begins to collapse.
Told through immersive chatroom dialogue and narration, The Denko Saga explores loneliness, online anonymity, and the unsettling power of collective influence over a stranger’s life.
The Denko Saga is a 12-episode audio drama inspired by a notorious internet forum thread that blurs the line between real-time storytelling and online myth.
Background & Concept
While studying at university, we encountered The Denko Saga, a cult internet story originating from anonymous Japanese message board posts. It begins as a request for romantic advice and gradually unfolds into a disturbing narrative of obsession and stalking. Its ambiguity-real or fictional-and its participatory structure, where readers help shape its emotional tension, inspired our adaptation.
Themes of loneliness in digital spaces and collective responsibility became central to our interpretation.
Over two years, we adapted the material into a script, restructuring and expanding it into a cohesive dramatic form with added characters and partially fictionalized elements.
From Concept to Audio
We chose audio over a web series to preserve the intimacy of the original format and to better explore the protagonist’s inner world.
Production
The Denko Saga was fully developed in-house, from script and casting to direction and post-production, and released in autumn 2023 as a 12-episode audio drama on Spotify.
